"NEW YORK (AP) -- Rush will be appearing on "The Colbert Report," and it's not Limbaugh.

The Canadian band Rush, which hasn't performed on U.S. television in more than three decades, will play their classic "Tom Sawyer" on the Comedy Central show Wednesday (11:30 p.m. EST). The Geddy Lee-led trio, which is currently on tour, hasn't played on U.S. television since 1975."

Market for shark's teeth? Ritual Shark Abuse? Aliens?

Jul. 14th, 2008 | 11:44 am

GRIFFIN, Ga. -- State wildlife officials will try to learn Monday how a pile of dead sharks wound up on a rural Spalding County road.

Drivers spotted the six sharks Sunday afternoon on the side of Minter Road near Griffin. Wildlife officials said it appears the sharks died recently.

Griffin residents said they couldn’t believe their eyes.

"I thought they looked like sharks, but I can't freaking believe it," said resident Kara Davel. "I think it’s disgusting. People actually dump a lot of trash on this road."

Wildlife officials said hunting sharks is a crime in Georgia, and could bring the hunter as much as $100,000 in fines.

Officials said they noticed something unusual about the sharks. Each of the six sharks had all of their teeth removed. Whoever killed the sharks had to break the animals’ jaws to get the teeth.

"That is very strange, very strange. I can’t even imagine how they would have ended up there,” said resident Terry Becker.

Officials will retrieve the sharks sometime Monday. Depending on what type of sharks they are, state officials could launch an investigation.

"The fact that they're wasting all that meat and they're not using them for anything, I don't know if that's legal," Davel said.

Shock and Awe...

music: Richard Thompson - Oops I did it again!

CBC has a great summer radio show called "Between the Covers", which has as it's aim to bring out interesting versions of songs that are well known in their original version. I was drifting off to sleep when I heard the distinctive sound of Richard Thompson's voice, but I couldn't believe the song he was singing...it was Brittney Spears's "Oops I did it again!". Talk about having your head space whacked around! I found the CD that has it on, which I will buy tomorrow, but I found a copy that you can listen to on-line at NPR. It's a live in the NPR studio version. I'll also give the link where you can listen to the who interview as well:

Three things....

Jul. 2nd, 2008 | 12:29 pm

Three things I've done that I doubt anyone on my f-list has done.
(And, supposedly if someone has done them, I'll try to replace them.)
snarfed from [info]dagibbs.

1. Designed and built 2 Linux Distributions used commercially (one of which is still being used!)
2. Started an APA (APAplexy) that still exists today.
3. Ran a recording studio where I engineered/produced an album for a singer/sonwriter

New hope for treating autism with a commonly available drug!

By Nikhil Swaminathan

"A drug already on the market for a completely unrelated condition could be used to treat a form of mental retardation linked to autism—if the results of a study in mice hold up, researchers report.

Scientists used rapamycin—a medication doctors prescribe to patients who have had transplants to prevent their bodies from rejecting the new organs—to treat learning disorders associated with a disease called tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in mice. TSC is a rare genetic disorder that causes brain tumors, seizures, learning disabilities, skin lesions and kidney tumors in the 50,000 Americans and one million people worldwide who have the disease.

Half of those with TSC are autistic, and as many as one in five people with the condition also suffer from mental retardation, so the hope is that rapamycin may be used to treat learning disabilities and short-term memory deficits in all kinds of autism as well, says neurobiologist and co-author of a study in Nature Medicine, Alcino Silva of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles."
